Since the 1900s invasive species of insects or bugs have crossed borders and spread their menace in different countries via pallets. Different species like the elm ark tree beetle, emerald ash bore, etc have infected and destroyed the forests. As a preventative measure, the IPCC i.e. The International Plant Protection Convention issued the ISPMs i.e International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures. Under this, heat treatment should be compulsorily used to protect the wood pallets from invasive species while crossing international borders.
The international export standards mandates that ISPM 15 heat-treated pallets be used for exports.

What Is Heat Treatment?
In heat treatment chambers propane or natural gas is used. The wood is kept enclosed in the chamber for 30 mins after being brought to a core temperature of 56 degrees celsius. The temperature is monitored with the help of probes placed inside the pallets. Computerized technology ensures that the process is fool-proof.
Now that we have understood the process, let us look at some of the benefits provided by the heat treatment method for wooden pallets.
1. Meet The Export Requirements
As mentioned above only ISPM-15 certified wood crates are allowed to cross borders. This regulation prevents unknown species from destroying a foreign environment.
2. Sterilization
This is an essential requirement because insects are being carried in wooden pallets and they can cause infection among those handling the pallets.
3. Reduces The Weight Of The Pallets
Heat treatment absorbs the moisture and lightens the weight of the pallet. Although there is no drastic weight loss, the small reductions can add up to the following:
a. Fuel usage is reduced
b. More products can be loaded.
4. Mold And Bacteria Are Kept At Bay
We all know that since wood is a porous material it absorbs moisture quite easily. Bacteria and mold can attack such porous surfaces quite easily. These in turn are transferred to the products being carried on the pallet. Pest control in UAE provides suitable heat treatment procedures which ensure that the products are not rejected on the grounds of unsanitary conditions.
If you are an international exporter you probably understand the significance of having heat-treated wooden pallets. On the other hand, if you are planning to venture into the field of exports, this article is a useful beginner's guide for you.
